What is GST?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a comprehensive indirect tax levied on the manufacture, sale, and consumption of goods and services in India. It replaced multiple cascading taxes like VAT, service tax, and excise duty when it was introduced on 1 July 2017. GST operates on a dual structure — CGST (Central GST, collected by the central government) and SGST (State GST, collected by the state government) for intrastate transactions. For interstate transactions, IGST (Integrated GST) applies at the full rate. GST follows a destination-based consumption tax model — it is collected at the point of consumption, not production. India has four primary GST slabs: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%, applied based on the nature of goods and services.

GST Formula and Calculation Method
GST calculations are straightforward but differ depending on whether you are adding GST to a base price or extracting it from a GST-inclusive amount. Here are both formulas:
Adding GST to Base Price
GST Amount = Base Price × (GST Rate ÷ 100)
Final Price = Base Price + GST Amount
Example: ₹1,000 base + 18% GST → GST = ₹180 (CGST ₹90 + SGST ₹90) → Final = ₹1,180
Extracting GST from Inclusive Price (Reverse Calculation)
Base Price = Inclusive Price ÷ (1 + GST Rate ÷ 100)
GST Amount = Inclusive Price − Base Price
Example: ₹1,180 inclusive (18% GST) → Base = ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 → GST = ₹180
CGST and SGST Split
For intrastate transactions: CGST = SGST = Total GST ÷ 2. For 18% GST: CGST = 9%, SGST = 9%. For interstate transactions: IGST = full GST rate applied (no split). IGST is collected by the Centre and later apportioned to the destination state.
Always verify the applicable GST rate for your specific product or service using the HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) code on the GST portal before invoicing.
